Super VC-10 G-ASGC, now preserved at Duxford Air Museum, hurtled across the North Atlantic at a speed that was just below the maximum the aircraft was allowed. The Flight Engineer was in his element and spent the night fine-tuning the engines to keep the speed spot on. After a short time the Chief Steward came onto the flight deck and announced that the dinner service was complete and that the passengers were now all bedded down for the night.
“I am sorry to spoil your rest break but we will be landing in just over two hours,” I said.
“What are we flying? A bloody Concorde or something! I will have to wake them up for a full English breakfast in one hour,” he replied.
“Scrub the breakfast and give them champagne for landing,” was my response.
We landed at Prestwick on the Scottish west coast after just five hours and one minute from take-off at JFK. The scheduled time was six hours and twenty minutes so this was some achievement and to this day has never been beaten by a scheduled aircraft.

I'm giving this book 3 stars because I enjoyed reading about the aviation -- the training involved, the navigating, the times when things didn't go quite as planned, and the worldwide locations involved. The author is very good at explaining the intricacies of navigation, both in the old days doing it with what sounds like a bit of string and some hairclips, and then on to the more automated and accurate systems of today.BUT I have two issues. First, if you're going to write a book and charge cash money for it, either learn the elements of writing, or hire an editor. There are far too many typos, and misuses of words. (It's "lo and behold", not "low and behold", perhaps fifty times!). The use of "as I said before" got really annoying after the 100'th occurrence, and suggested the author simply dictated his memoirs then collected his royalties. It's all too common in publishing these days, but not in a full priced book.
Secondly, the author takes justifiable pride in his flying skills, learned by long practice and some aptitude. He also seems to take great pride in having the morals of an alley cat. I wasn't aware that British Airways placed cabin crew aboard mainly for the sexual gratification of the pilots, but it seems that way here. There wasn't a single word about the cabin crew doing their job safely, except when it came to bringing the pilots their tea and first class dinner. The author complains about his unsuccessful marital life. Well here's a clue: put some effort into it yourself, rather than seeing the world beyond UK as some sort of expanded private bedroom.
I don't know if I want to hear the end of the story -- maybe if it shows up in the 99 cent bin.

Gwyn has led an amazing life. His journey makes fascinating reading and its hard to put this book down. He describes his relationships so well with a hint of dry humour. Never a dull moment. This book is a must read for any aspiring pilot and anyone who has any interest in air travel or the airlines. A great book to kill time on a long flight.
Gwyn Mullet has a really interesting story to tell about his life, his passion for aviation and how he ended up as BOAC's youngest captain on Vickers VC10s. His writing style is such that you don't notice that you keep reading and reading from one exotic location to the next, from one stressful checkflight to the next 'first solo' and so on. The only negative about the book is that this is 'part 1' and you do end up wanting to know what happened next... If you'd like to know what the life of an airline pilot in the 70s was like, this may be the best book out there to read!
